This blog is dedicated to capturing many of my technically interesting, engineering endeavors outside of my real engineering career. I will hope to showcase my diverse interests, skills, and ideas, in big and not so big engineering projects.

Mini Quad Build > CC3D Atom Mount
CC3D Atom Mount from someone printing on Ebay.
(Have not test fitted the PCB yet.)
This is about same as the original CC3D Atom case:
But there is now a mounting solution on the 30.5 x 30.5 pattern.
Mini Quad Build > FPV Camera Install
FPV camera glued with epoxy to top plate. Also wires epoxied for strain relief.
Weight is coming in slightly less than predicted.

Mini Quad Build > Switching Receivers
After dealing with the OrangeRX R410X receiver DOA, I decided to order a LemonRX LM0039 receiver.
(Yes, going from OrangeRX to LemonRX, from a knock-off to a knock-off of a knock-off.)
The LemonRX LM0039 is an 8ch DSMX full nano, ~2.9g, dual diversity antenna with PPM. And most importantly, it is easily available on Ebay in US.
LemonRX LM0039 here.
Still waiting for the OrangeRX satellite R111XN, but realized soldering the 3.3v source on the CC3D atom PCD is going to be challenging.

Mini Quad Build > Frame / PDB / Motors / ESC's
2 hours of soldering, with not the prettiest ESC to motors connections because of space constraints. CC3D flight controller has menu select for "reversing motor rotation" so doesn't matter how the 3-wires connect.
Note convenient use of frame posts to hold ESC's.
Need to always reference this, so putting this here.
Each ESC had ~4-5g of wires coming off, so ESC weight assumption was high.
I may save a couple more grams when I shorten those ESC control wires and removing ground.
(No ground looping to ESC!!)
Surprisingly, overall matches to the original loose weight tally up to this point, which mean we on track to be overweight!

Mini Quad Build > Sub 250g Quadcopter Baseline
This guy on youtube video served as my baseline for my attempt for a sub-250g quad build.
His weight estimate from public data sheets looks like this:
Descriptions | Qty | Unit Weight g | Total Weight g
DTI Blade 150 Frame | 1 | 21.5 | 21.5
DYS 1306 3100KV motors | 4 | 12 | 48
DYS SN20A ESC | 4 | 7.6 | 30.4 | |
CC3D Flight Controller | 1 | 9 | 9
OrangeRx R616XN Receiver | 1 | 1.4 | 1.4
Micro FPV camera | Eachine 600TVL | 1 | 23 | 23 |
Video Transmitter | Eachine ET200 | 1 | 15 | 15 |
Batt | 2s 700mah | 1 | 46 | 46 |
HD Cam | Mobius? | 1 | 45 | 45 |
Fluff | 2.7 | |||
Video Baseline 242g | 242 |
However, if you look closely, some components are missing but the still makes weight, like props, wiring, FPV TX antenna, PDB, etc. This leads me to think published weigh values are overweight.
I choose to begin with a Diatone Blade 180mm frame, because I like to use full size 4" props. I don't plan for an HD recorder for my first quad build but I want to run 3s batt. There's not much weight margin to spare.
Trying to meet this sub-250g constraint makes this quad build so much more challenging. If no such constraint, a 250mm class quad would be easier and slightly cheaper.
Mini Quad Build > OrangeRX receiver DOA
OrangeRX R410X receiver arrived DOA.
Youtube video for RMA return proof:
I don't know of any ~2g DSM2 receivers with CPPM, so I'll have to stick with OrangeRX.
I have a OrangeRX R111XN coming in because I found out the CC3D can run this satellite receiver as standalone. The R111XN is even smaller than the R410 with a single CPPM connection and it has a single antenna wire. And it was available on ebay!
Look forward to installing it.
